ADVENTURE DISCOVERY SCHOOL

A Boarding School for ADHD and AuDHD Students in Grades 7–12

A small, experiential boarding school in the mountains of Western North Carolina, drawing students from across the country.

Adventure Discovery School was built for neurodivergent teens with ADHD, AuDHD, executive function challenges, and learning differences. We pair personalized academics with social-emotional learning and adventure-based education, so students who haven’t fit anywhere else can finally make sense of school and start to grow.

What We Believe

The right support changes everything.

When a student isn’t thriving in a conventional classroom, we look deeper. We ask what structure, support, and community will help this teen finally feel capable, confident, and ready to grow. Every decision we make begins there.

Relationships come first.

Students learn best when they feel known, safe, and connected to the adults and peers around them. In a small boarding community built on trust, meaningful relationships aren’t a bonus, they’re the foundation of every breakthrough.

Structure is support, not restriction.

For teens with ADHD, executive function challenges, and emotional regulation needs, predictable routines and clear expectations are scaffolding. They make growth possible.

Independence is the goal.

Every class, expedition, and shared responsibility is designed to help students know themselves, advocate for themselves, and build the real-world skills to move forward with confidence.

Built for Neurodivergent Learners

Designed specifically for teens who thrive with predictable structure, active learning, frequent feedback, and adults who actually know them.

Many of our students are neurodivergent or have learning differences that make conventional classrooms a poor fit, not because they lack intelligence or character, but because those environments weren’t built for the way they think. Our staff respond with co-regulation, predictable routines, and developmentally appropriate expectations.

And we celebrate what neurodivergence brings: original thinking, creativity, empathy, deep passion, and resilience. We don’t ask students to become someone else to succeed. We help them understand themselves, build on their strengths, and develop the skills they need for what comes next.

Academics That Make Sense

Rigorous, supportive, and designed to feel meaningful. Students learn in small classes where expectations are clear, relationships are strong, and the work is active.

Alongside core academics, students develop communication, collaboration, self-advocacy, and the routines that make learning sustainable. A structured daily schedule, built-in study hall, and dedicated homework support give teens the consistency and confidence that traditional classrooms often fail to provide.

Social-Emotional Learning

Woven into the daily rhythm because educating the whole student matters, especially for teens with emotional regulation challenges, ADHD, or learning differences.

Social-Emotional Learning

Woven into the daily rhythm because educating the whole student matters, especially for teens with emotional regulation challenges, ADHD, or learning differences.

Through intentional practice, students strengthen emotional intelligence, self-management, communication, empathy, conflict resolution, and decision-making. This regular space for reflection builds the self-esteem, resilience, and sense of belonging that makes all other growth possible.

Experiential Learning and Expeditions

Experiential learning isn’t an elective here, it’s our most powerful teaching tool.

Our adventure-based model takes students beyond the classroom through outdoor expeditions, community service, hands-on projects, and international travel. Throughout the year, students join overnight trips, caving, snorkeling, backpacking, climbing, canoeing, that connect coursework to the outdoors and the wider world. Each year also includes an international trip, a school-wide city trip focused on culture and art, and a summer Spanish immersion program. Through real challenge and guided reflection, students grow in confidence, leadership, and a stronger sense of who they are.

A Day in the Life

A predictable daily rhythm is one of the most powerful supports we offer teens with ADHD and executive function challenges.

A Day in the Life

A predictable daily rhythm is one of the most powerful supports we offer teens with ADHD and executive function challenges.

Each day includes classes, physical movement, shared meals, social-emotional learning, community responsibilities, and built-in study hall. For students who have spent years feeling overwhelmed or disorganized, this structure can be transformational, creating the consistency that builds follow-through, time management, and lasting independence.

Boarding Life and Community

More than a school day. A small boarding community where daily life is designed entirely around growth.

Boarding gives students consistent opportunities to build independence, form real friendships, and feel the steady support of the community. For many teens, the most important growth happens outside the classroom: at shared meals, in evening routines, and in the everyday moments alongside people who genuinely know them. That rhythm builds confidence, belonging, and life skills that last well beyond graduation.
